The Korean War Armistice Agreement

○ Signed on 27 July 1953
 ● "a complete cessation of hostilities and of all acts of armed force in Korea until a final

    peaceful settlement is achieved"
● Established the Korean Demilitarized Zone and the Military Demarcation Line
● Established the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission and the UN Command Military

   Armistice Committee
※nK and China withdrew from UNC MAC in 1992

○ Continued violation of the Armistice Agreement by nK
   ● Nuclear tests (2006, 2009, 2013)
   ● Attacking ROKS CHEONAN (2010) and shelling YP DO (2010)
   ● The First and Second Battles of Yeonpyeong (1999, 2002), Gangneung (1996) and

      Yeosu (1998) submarine infiltration incidents
   ● Bombing of Korean Air Flight 858 (1987), an assassination attempt against President  

      Chun at Rangoon, Myanmar(1983)
   ● The Axe murder incident (1976), secret underground tunnels
   ● The Blue House Raid (1968), special operations forces infiltration into Uljin and

      Samcheok (1968)

○ nK declares the Armistice Agreement to be void (5 March 2013)
※unilateral nullification by nK is unacceptable (UN, MOFAT)

Significance of the Korean War Armistice Agreement
○ Communist invasion by nK repelled by ROK and UN forces from 60 countries
○ National security can be ensured only through a strong military and ROK-US alliance
○ Post-war devastation was replaced by unprecedented economic development via a united effort of the Korean people

United Nations Security Council Resolution 83 (27 June 1950)
"The Security Council,

Having determined that the armed attack upon the Republic of Korea by forces from North Korea constitutes a breach of peace,
Having called for an immediate cessation of hostilities,
Having called upon the authorities in North Korea to withdraw forthwith their armed forces to the 38th parallel,
Having noted from the report of the United Nations Commission on Korea that the authorities in North Korea have neither ceased hostilities nor withdrawn their armed forces to the 38th parallel, and that urgent military measures are required to restore international peace and security,
Having noted the appeal from the Republic of Korea to the United Nations for immediate and effective steps to secure peace and security,
Recommends that the Members of the United Nations furnish such assistance to the Republic of Korea as may be necessary to repel the armed attack and to restore international peace and security in the area."

The Scars of the Korean War still linger in our hearts. The War ended with 3 million casualties, with 10 million people separated from their families,  countless wounded veterans, war widows and orphans. The entire Korean Peninsula laid to ruins.

5. Chinese intervention and a new phase of the War (25 October 1950 - 9 July 1951)
Due to China's intervention on 19 October 1950, Seoul fell for the second time on 4 January 1951. Following a ROK and UNC counteroffensive from Pyongtaek and Samcheok, a stalemate ensued around the 38th parallel.

6. Armistice negotiations and outpost war (10 July 1951 - 27 July 1953)
Armistice negotiations began on 10 July 1951, and bloody battles for patches of land ranged across the frontline. The Korean War Armistice Agreement was signed on 27 July 1953, and the Military Demarcation Line was drawn.
